Ibaia String Quartet

8th October 2023

Late autumn sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for a sparkling performance from the four young string players from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire. They gave us some glorious music at All Saints Church in Flore on October 8th.

We were treated to dazzling renditions of quartets from Haydn and Mendelssohn. In the first half we heard Haydn’s string quartet no.1 from his Opus 77, written towards the end of his long and illustrious career. In contrast in the second half we heard Mendelssohn’s quartet no.2 which was written when the composer was even younger than our performers.

Both pieces were performed with aplomb and energy and were well received by an extremely appreciative audience.

The quartet also gave us some lighter moments with cunning adaptations of “What a wonderful world”, “Can’t take my eyes off you” and for encore “Octopus’s Garden”. Truly something for everyone.

The autumn sunshine meant that patrons could take their interval coffee and cake – ably prepared and distributed by willing volunteers – outside into the churchyard, an unexpected bonus for the time of year.

We wish the performers well as they continue their studies and hope to see them again at some point in the future.
